Dr Melissa Chong is an accredited psychiatrist (Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists). Dr Chong also holds a Master of Psychiatry (MPM) from the University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Monash University, and a RANZCP Certificate of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Over the past ten years, Dr Chong has worked in a variety of psychiatric and medical roles, across the Alfred Health, Austin Health, Monash Health, and Peninsula Health networks. At these services, she has worked within psychiatric inpatient hospital teams, perinatal and infant teams, child and adolescent teams, outreach and crisis response teams, and neurodevelopmental assessment teams.
Along with experience working in some of Australia’s largest and busiest metropolitan health services, Dr Chong has worked extensively with regional health services. Throughout her career, Dr Chong has treated patients and families from a wide range of backgrounds, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
Dr Chong has specialist psychiatric training in performing Family Therapy (through The Bouverie Centre and the University of Melbourne’s Mindful Centre), which she has applied during her time working with Alfred Health. She is experienced in treating eating disorders using Family Based Therapy (FBT) principles. Furthermore, Dr Chong has undergone extensive training in diagnosing and treating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including with the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). Dr Chong has special clinical interests in diagnosing and treating anxiety, depression, neurodevelopmental disorders (including ASD and ADHD), eating disorders, and trauma conditions.
She provides individual psychotherapy, family therapy and child-focused parent work. Dr Chong’s practice is primarily oriented towards children, adolescents and young adults.
Referrals over the age of 30 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
